Municipal Funerals

Stockton on Tees Borough Council does not currently operate a Municipal Funeral service.

For those who do not wish to purchase grave space, burial in a public or common grave may be an option, but it should be remembered that it is not possible to place a memorial on this type of grave and that unrelated persons may also be buried in that grave.

If the person responsible for arranging a funeral is in receipt of any of the following benefits,

  • Income Support
  • Job Seekers Allowance (income based)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Disabled Persons Tax Credit
  • Working Families Tax Credit

then they may be entitled to a Funeral Payment from the Social Fund. For further information contact your local DSS office or visit the Department of Work and Pensions website.
