The Core Strategy will be a strategic document that will set out the vision and Spatial Strategy for meeting known and anticipated development requirements to 2021, including the numbers of dwellings required. It will include a key diagram to show broad locations (not specific sites) to meet specific requirements, key transportation elements, the main patterns of movement and relationships to other strategies and with other local authority areas. It will also include a suite of generic criteria based development control policies.
Issues and Options for the Core Strategy were consulted on in Spring 2006. A reconsultation on the Locational Strategy was also undertaken in Autumn that year. The Council's Preferred Options Report was consulted on in Autumn 2007. Comments received in response to the consultation on its Preferred Options for the Core Strategy will be used to help the Council prepare the Core Strategy for submission to the Secretary of State for the Environment in 2008.

Implications of the new Planning Policy Statement 12 and amended regulations
Under the Local Development Scheme, we were due to submit our Core Strategy to the Secretary of State in September 2008. However, under the new regulations, which come into force on 1 September 2008, the procedure has changed.
We are now required to publish our Core Strategy before we submit it to the Secretary of State and allow atleast 6 weeks for representations to be made. These representations should identify any fundamental problems with the plan and relate to its soundness. We have decided to publish our Core Strategy towards the end of September allowing an eight week period for representations to be made. Further details will be provided nearer the time.
Following this consultation and considering the representations recevied, we hope to submit the Core Strategy to the Secretary of State early in the New Year. It is anticipated that the Examination will take place a few months later and Core Strategy will be adopted as Council policy in the Autumn.
