Do I need to apply for Building Regulations?

Building Regulation approval is required for many aspects of building work, proposed to many buildings e.g. houses, shops, offices, factories, schools, hospitals and warehouses etc. The Regulations may also apply to minor work, such as replacing windows and doors, removing internal load bearing walls, installing an additional toilet or converting the roof space to a room, as well as erecting a new building and extending property. Building Regulation approval can also also be required when a property changes use, e.g. from a house into flats

If you are thinking of carrying out any building work, please check with the Council to establish if the work is subject to control under the Building Regulations

Some extensions and alterations are exempt from the Building Regulations (see Building Regulation Exemptions guidance note)

Planning Permission
You may also require Planning Permission for the proposed work even if it is exempt from Building Regulation approval. You may check this by contacting the Planning Department on  telephone number (01642 526022)
