You can use an electrician or contractor who is not a member of the 'Competent Person Scheme' but is a 'Qualified Person' e.g. qualified to City & Guilds 2400, or similar (refer to the Electrical Safety Guidance note, in the downloads section below for a full list).
If the electrical work is an integral part of an extension or new dwelling, for which a Building Regulation application has already been made, you do not need to submit a separate application. You must however, inform us when the electrical work has reached the 1st fix stage - before it's plastered or covered over, so that we can inspect it for compliance.
If the electrical work is not an integral part of work for which a Building Regulation application has already been made (but is carried out by a 'Qualified Person'), then you must submit a Building Notice to us, together with the appropriate fee, based upon the estimated cost of the work. You must also notify us upon completion of the 1st fix stage of work, as noted above.
Upon completion, the 'Qualified Person' will carry out tests of the electrical work and providing the results are satisfactory; issue a Certificate in accordance with BS 7671. You should keep this certificate for future reference and send a copy of it to us.
After the BS7671 Certificate has been issued, you must notify us so that we can carry out an inspection of the completed work. If the work is satisfactory, we will issue a Building Regulation Completion Certificate, which you should keep for future reference.
We will not however issue the Completion Certificate, until we have received a copy of the BS7671 Certificate, and all of the work (including any associated building work) has been satisfactorily completed.
