Part P - Competent Persons

This is the simplest way of achieving compliance.

If the work consists of electrical work only, all you need to do is select an electrician who is a member of one of the 'Competent Person' schemes (refer to the External Links section at the side of this page) and a Building Regulation application is not required.

The 'Competent Person' (electrician) should ensure that the electrical work is designed, installed, inspected and tested in accordance with BS7671 and upon completion of the electrical work, you should receive a completed Electrical Installation Certificate from the installer. You should keep this certificate for future reference.

If there is no other work involved, you do not need to do anything further,

If however, the work is done in association with other building work (such as an extension or alteration), you may need to submit a separate Building Regulation Application for the building work only. Please refer to the "Do I need to apply for Building Regulations" page of this website
