The following are examples of work that requires Building Regulation approval.
The erection of a new building or the extension of an existing building such as a kitchen extension or loft conversion.
Structural alterations to an existing building such as underpinning foundations, removal or alteration of load bearing walls, removal or partial removal of chimney breasts, creating an opening in a loadbearing wall.
Alterations which may affect the means of escape provisions of a building such as alterations to internal walls, changing the use of rooms within a building, alterations to doors and fire doors.
Changing the use of an existing building such as converting a garage to a living room, a house to flats or a shop to a public building.
The extension or alteration of certain services and fittings, installation/alteration of drainage, installation of waste appliances (e.g. providing a W.C. under the stairs), installation of a boiler, renewal of windows, installation/alteration of electric circuits (dwellings only).

Some extensions and alterations are exempt from the Building Regulations; please refer to the Building Regulation Exemptions guidance note or Schedule 2 of The Building Regulations 2000 in the External Links section on the left of this page.
