Full Time Students

A person will be disregarded for Council Tax discount purposes if they are a student on a full time course of education at university or college.

A full time course of education is one which:-

a) Lasts for at least one academic calendar year;

b) The student is required to attend for at least 24 weeks

c) Involves 21 hours per week of studies, tuition or work experience.

The Government announced changes to the treatment of full time students for council tax purposes which came into effect on 13 May 2011. 

There are 2 significant changes:

• a student can now undertake their study at a prescribed educational establishment in any Member State of the European Union, not just Great Britain.
• the requirement to physically attend such an establishment has been removed.
