Disabled Reduction

If a disabled person lives in your property and your property has certain features, which are of major importance to the well being of the disabled person, you may qualify for a reduction in your Council Tax bill. New regulations from 1 April 2000 mean that if your home is in Band A you can also apply for a Disabled Persons Reduction.

The property must be the sole or main home of someone who is substantially and permanently disabled whether by illness, injury, congenital deformity or otherwise. They do not have to be the person responsible for the Council Tax and may be a child.

Grounds for application are:-

  • Is there a room which is not a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory and which is mainly used by and is required for meeting the needs of the disabled person in your home.
  • Is there a second bathroom or kitchen required for meeting the needs of the disabled person?
  • Is there sufficient floor space to allow a wheelchair to be used indoors by the disabled person to assist mobility?
  • Does the disabled person use a wheelchair in the house to assist mobility?

To qualify for this reduction you must have answered 'yes' to at least one of the above.
